Kent Sinfonia - Malcolm Riley (conductor)
George Butterworth (1885 - 1916) & Walter Leigh (1905 - 1942) lost their lives at a young age in the 1st & 2nd World Wars respectively. Both had already achieved a great deal as composers and showed huge potential for the future - sadly not to be realised. Butterworth, famous for his musical depictions of landscapes was already a significant musical force at the time of his death by a sniper's bullet at the battle of the Somme. Leigh, less known, was spotted early in his career by the BBC and wrote numerous soundtracks for early television, a wonderful example of which is 'The Fairy of The Phone'.
